Why Does Perimenopause Make Me Feel So Tired?

Perimenopause fatigue can feel different from simply needing an early bedtime. You may wake up tired, hit a wall in the afternoon, or feel as though your usual energy has disappeared even though your life has not changed dramatically. For women entering the menopause transition, fatigue can be connected to several overlapping changes, including disrupted sleep, night sweats, mood changes, stress, and shifting hormones. But persistent exhaustion should never automatically be blamed on perimenopause without considering the rest of your health.

Why Can Perimenopause Affect Energy?

Perimenopause brings changes in hormone levels. These changes can affect your period, mood, body temperature, and sleep.

Sleep is often a big part of the problem. Hot flashes and night sweats can wake you during the night. Anxiety can also make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.

You may spend enough time in bed but still wake up feeling tired. After several nights of poor sleep, daytime fatigue can become much harder to manage.

The Office on Women’s Health notes that sleep problems are common during perimenopause and menopause. These problems can also leave you feeling more tired during the day.

What Else Can Cause Fatigue in Midlife?

Not every new symptom in your 40s is caused by menopause.

Thyroid problems, anemia, sleep apnea, depression, medications, nutritional deficiencies, and other health conditions can also cause fatigue.

Heavy or changing menstrual bleeding may also contribute to low iron levels.

If your fatigue is new, severe, or ongoing, talk with your healthcare provider. Finding the cause is important. You should not feel like you simply need to push through it.

Look at the Whole Pattern

Instead of asking only, “Why am I tired?” look at what else has changed.

Are your periods becoming irregular? Have your hot flashes started? Are you waking up during the night? Has your anxiety increased?

You may also notice changes in your energy, mood, or sleep habits.

These details can help your healthcare provider understand what may be contributing to your fatigue. They can also help determine whether you need further evaluation.

Where Does Acupuncture Fit?

Acupuncture is one complementary option some women choose during perimenopause. Depending on the individual, the goals may include relaxation, stress support, sleep, hot flashes, or general well-being.

At Ageless Acupuncture & Wellness, I do not treat every tired woman as though she has the same problem. We begin with conversation. I want to know what your sleep looks like, how your cycle is changing, what your stress level is, what other symptoms you are experiencing, and what your medical providers have already evaluated.

That gives us a much more useful picture than the word “fatigue” alone.

You Do Not Have to Accept Exhaustion as Your New Normal

Perimenopause is a normal life transition, but feeling chronically depleted does not have to become your identity.

There may be several things contributing to your energy, and finding the right support can take a little investigation. Start with appropriate medical evaluation, especially when fatigue is persistent or significant. Then consider the supportive practices that help your body recover, including sleep habits, movement, nutrition, stress care, and complementary therapies when appropriate.

If you are experiencing perimenopause fatigue in Charleston or Mount Pleasant and want to explore acupuncture as part of your wellness plan, I would be happy to meet you.

Sometimes feeling better begins with stopping long enough to acknowledge that “tired all the time” is worth talking about.
